Ecology

A tufted annual to perennial herb which grows in drier habitats than the other subspecies, usually over sand and gravel in places which are moist or flooded in winter but dry out in summer. It rarely grows submerged in water, and is relatively intolerant of competition. Generally lowland, but reaching 450 m at South Stainmore (Westmorland).

M. fontana subsp. chondrosperma is a distinctive subspecies which appears to be fairly well recorded. It shows little change in distribution since it was mapped by Perring & Sell (1968).

World Distribution

European Temperate element, but distribution imperfectly known.
