Ecology

A sprawling, well-branched perennial herb that was naturalised on the banks of a ditch on the Isle of Dogs (Surrey), and remains established in rank grass and open areas of woodland in several sites in Norfolk. Elsewhere it is found as a casual on roadsides and hedge banks, arising from bird-seed or, rarely, as a garden escape. Lowland.

C. baccifer has been regarded as native but is now accepted as probably alien. It was apparently first recorded from the wild in 1570, and has been known from W. Norfolk since 1914.

Native of Europe, S.W. Asia and disjunctly in E. Asia.
